The New York Times has called adherence the world's "other drug problem." Physicians prescribe medications, but patients do not always use them. While it would be easy for physicians to blame patients for treatment failures, physicians can do more to motivate patients to use their medications as recommended.
Perhaps we can provide better care to our patients simply by encouraging them to use the medications we already have than we can by developing new ones. We may even be able to clear them of their skin disease by administering therapies they have already tried—but did not use consistently or correctly—without needing to resort to riskier or more expensive therapies. This is not a theoretical tome; it is an easy-to-read, entertaining look at the many steps we can use to encourage patients to use their medications. Practical Ways to Improve Patient Adherence is an excellent resource for physicians and allied health professionals whose patients exhibit poor adherence. Daniel J. Lewis, M.D. and experienced adherence researcher Steven R. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D. examine the problem of poor adherence in dermatology and offer concrete techniques to improve adherence. Named the winner of the 2022 "Best Overall" Dermie Award by Dermasphere, the book offers novel, potent ways to get patients to use their medications and improve treatment outcomes—tools healthcare providers can use day in and day out. A medical education is not complete without a thorough understanding of the hurdles that contribute to poor adherence and what we as health professionals can and should do about it. |

"A great guide for an important topic." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"This volume is highly recommended for all practitioners, especially early in their career."
"Adherence to medication remains a major obstacle for the patient and the practitioner. An international society, established a decade ago, meets yearly and attempts to provide simple solutions for this difficult problem. It is generally believed that 50% of prescriptions are not even filled, and that the refill rate is significantly less than it should be. Doctors Lewis and Feldman provide a compact (193 pages) solution to the problem, aimed specifically for the dermatologic patient. If every resident and young healthcare provider studied this volume, they would be far more effective in helping patients than most of us are. This text is divided into the general problems facing all of medicine, such as a the problem of poor patient adherence and the foundation of trust and accountability. Unique in the book are those chapters dealing specifically with dermatologic problems, such as the pediatric atopic dermatitis patient, and scalp psoriasis." - Howard I. Maibach, MD, Journal of Dermatological Treatment, August 21, 2019
"Very cool book" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Wow! I didn't think much of the book when I bought it but it turned out to be VERY cool! It was a pretty easy read (unlike my usual medical school books), as the authors keep it light and funny. It definitely changes the way you think about how doctors prescribe medications and how hard everything is for our patients to follow all of our instructions. I found the boxes with helpful hints or quotes to use with our patients pretty high-yield. I can definitely see this book changing how I would do things in my practice." - Google Books, April 14, 2018
